No permission is needed to illustrate the articles of the classics?

As an illustrator / designer, I thought to illustrate my narrative poems favorite fairy tales and short stories written by famous authors as a conventional personal project for fun and practice. Maybe in the future, I might be interested to publish a book with my best submissions (though). I also need to obtain permission from the copyright or license to use the conventional narrative of historical authors? How do I know if the authorization is needed and where to go or whom to contact to obtain those privileges? examples of stories from authors considered include Edgar Allan Poe, Aesop ( 's Fables of Aesop), maybe Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, etc. Thanks in advance.
