Need help designing a home office/dressing room?

We have very little closet space in our house. My husband’s clothes are in a spare room down the hall in a huge armoire. I hate that his clothes don’t have a closet, or fit in our bedroom. I don’t know if I should try and design the spare room to be an office/dressing room that houses his clothes and still functions as an office/study, or if I should try and fit that huge armoire in our bedroom. (it will fit, but just barely and it will be really hard to move!) Any ideas on designing a dual purpose room or just a really nice office/study? Organization tips for a house with no closets?

It’s hard to answer your question without knowing the size of the room and the locations of windows and doors. However, it should be very doable to create a dual purpose room.

Ideally, I would look for a wardrobe unit that matches or compliments the armoir. Wardrobes will accomodate his hanging clothes. Depending on the sizes of the walls, I would put a desk and chairs between the two clothing units, with adjustable shelves on the wall above the desk.

If the wall is not long enough, put a seat of some sort (a bench seat would be nice) between the clothing units, and put the desk and chair on the opposite wall.

My daughter has a 100-year-old house with very few (and tiny) closets. I guess people didn’t own as much back then. It’s a compound problem because the rooms are small as well. So there typically is not enough room to build the closets you need.

The best tip I can offer is to use lots of shelves. Go high whenever you can (5 or 6 shelves). Shelves only stick out about 12″ from the walls, but you can see everything on them. If this is not pleasing to you, you can hang a decorative curtain in front of the shelving. If you put a shelving unit of each side of a window, and then use the curtains to cover the shelving units, it will look like it all belongs.
