Diet Canned

My golden has kidney problems (IAMS canned) I need a low protein diet for her. Any good suggestions?
I took her to the vet after the recall. She has been drinking lots of water and was not herself.
I can’t afford the expensive vet brands but will do it for her.
She loves treats.
She has lost weight so I want to fatten her up a little.
In all cases, you will want to reduce the level of phosphurus rather than protein to minimize the progression of kidney disease.
Protein reduction is important once a dog is at the tail end of kidney failure, not before as previously thought. Research this on the internet.
You need to give your dog more protein to fatten her up, otherwise, she will loose even more weight.
If she is categorized with early renal deficiency, then Science Diet foods are ideal (i.e. such as their Adult Chicken and Rice kibble and canned foods.) They contain around 150 to 170 mg of phosphurus per 100 kcal. Science diet has some fillers that I wish they did not use, but all in all, it is a good food. Note that this food has normal levels of protein. Also, Senior foods tend to have lower phosphurous levels, but many are not as low as Science Diet Adult foods. Senior foods also have less protein.
If she is categorized with late renal deficiency, you will want to reduce phosphurous down to 50-75 mg per 100 kcal. This means you will need to get a precription from your Vet to purchase special renal formulations for dog food. These foods may have reduced protein.
Remember, it is better to give canned food as it contains moisture rather than dry kibble, which makes the kidneys work harder. One can always add water or low-sodium chicken broth to dry kibble to entice the dog to eat.
Avoid sodium (salt), Vitamin A and D supplements. Add Omega 3 (not 6) whenever possible.
Drinking a lot of water and seeing significant weight loss may imply that your dog is in the late renal deficiency stage. A Protein:Creatine urine test will let the Vet know what stage she is in.
Talk to your Vet for his/her recommendation on feeding.
Good luck!
