How to Use Sofrito

Sofrito and sofrito rice are taking the U.S. by storm. You can find sofrito served in many restaurants now, and you can also find tons of sofrito recipes online. In some parts of the country, you can even buy ready-to-serve sofrito in jars at supermarkets. You might be interested in trying sofrito, but perhaps you’re not exactly sure how to use it. If that’s the case, I’ll offer some suggestions.

Sofrito rice – This is my favorite way to eat sofrito. I make my own, and I sauté the sofrito until the ingredients are soft and warm. I then serve it on top of rice. Sometimes I cook the rice with the sofrito and chicken broth. It’s great with yellow rice, brown rice, and white rice.

Sofrito and beans – This is a good combination, also. I sometimes just spoon hot sofrito over a bowl of warm beans. I like it best with black beans, but it’s pretty good with red beans, as well. I also like to add a dollop of sour cream, and sometimes I add some grated cheese to the mix.

Sofrito and chips – Cold sofrito right out of the jar is great with tortilla chips! Sofrito can be used as a dip, much like salsa.

Soups – Sofrito gives soups a wonderful flavor and a nice punch. Try it in vegetable soup, bean and bacon soup, and beef and barley soup.
