How do you know if you have blood in your stool?

I took some Pepto and it turn my tongue black so I wonder if it my stool is black because of that. My question is how do you know if you have blood in your stool. How does it look like. Anything over the counter that I could take. My wife had a stomach bug a few days ago and I wonder if I have that now.

Sometimes you can actually see the blood, sometimes not, a fecal test will show if you have internal bleeding. If your wife had a stomach issue a few days ago, it would be my guess that it has moved on to you. If you currently take medication that is hard on the digestive system, contact your doc and explain your symptoms, he may want to run a test or two. If not, I wouldn’t be too concerned at this point.
